The Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology (DIDE) is responsible for early warning, epidemic preparedness and response. Port Health is coordinated by this unit as well as Cross-Border Surveillance and operates out of airports, seaports and ground crossings to limit the spread of public health risks while reducing disruptions with travel and trade.
Other core activities of the International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR) and Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) are coordinated to a very limited degree by a group of line ministries including the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Plans to establish a National Epidemic and Response Committee (NERC) composed of multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary officers that would bridge these disconnects are under negotiation as well as partnerships with pubic and private universities to provide training and technical support in epidemiology and food safety. An independent National Disaster Commission is also under development.
